The purpose of XML is to make the data understand to another platforms and languages. When you want to have the same data in different presentation (This is due to the fact that messaging is purely based on XML and XML can easily be converted to different document formats). SOAP is used to transfer or interpret the data for them (different languages, platforms) for them to have a communication or for them to work with different language and platforms.
